Can I Lose Weight Without Dieting?

Does Dieting Help with Weight Loss?

The Myth: In order to lose weight, you must adhere to a rigid diet.

Given that "diet" is a four-letter word for many of us, it's appropriate that it contains four letters. We link dieting with punishment, starving, self-punishment, skipping any enjoyable social events, and, in general, waiting till it's finished so we can resume living our lives—in thinner bodies, of course.

In the United States in 2012, 108 million individuals were following diets. Americans spend $20 billion on the weight-loss sector, which includes weight-loss surgery, diet medicines, and diet books, to assist them in achieving their goals.

But is it really necessary? Losing weight without following a diet is possible. For advice on how to lose weight in a healthy way and keep it off permanently, we spoke with nutrition experts Amy Jamieson Petonic, RD, of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the Nutrition Twins, Tammy Lakatos Shames and Lyssie Lakatos, of up wave.

The conclusion: Lifestyle modifications, not crash diets, are what result in the most successful weight loss.

According to Lakatos, weight reduction success doesn't need an all-or-nothing mentality. "Dieting is something you think you're on or off of temporarily. It frequently backfires when you persuade yourself that you can have this but not that. Because it's so difficult to maintain great restrictions for an extended length of time, many eventually give in and binge on the foods they had previously avoided.

Lakatos Shames argues that eating healthily is a way of life. "Pay attention to the healthy selections among the recommended foods. You'll have less room for dessert and junk food if you focus on eating fruits, veggies, lean meats, and complete grains. A dieting attitude focuses on what you can't consume.

A 3,500-calorie deficit must be reached in order to lose one pound. That may mean cutting 500 calories from your daily consumption over the course of a week or cutting 250 calories from your diet and burning 250 calories via exercise.

Lakatos explains that cutting 500 calories from your day might be as easy as taking one fewer mouthful at each meal and forgoing the sorbet after supper. One of our clients drowned her salad in dressing every time. She lost about 7 pounds quickly when she switched to balsamic vinegar and lemon juice. These modest adjustments have a significant impact.

According to the Platonic, dieting is associated negatively with eating. "Weight reduction will come with no effort when you start to link excellent, complete foods with enjoyment," Platonic advises consuming the following meals to aid in weight loss without dieting:

Eat whole grains such as brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and bread that is 100 percent whole-wheat. All include vital B vitamins and minerals that will keep you full and energized.

Quinoa: This full-spectrum plant protein provides all nine of the necessary amino acids and is a rich source of iron and fiber.

Salmon: This protein source is rich in the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA and offers important proteins for growth and development.

Pistachios: These high-protein nuts might help boost your metabolism and encourage fat burning.

But remember to get going! According to Lakatos, exercise is equally vital to nutrition since it helps you burn calories. "The best way to rev up your body and accelerate your metabolism is to exercise. Because they feel good about themselves after working out, our clients don't want to destroy their efforts by choosing the incorrect foods.
